age was curtailed by the frenzied sound of footsteps racing up the wooden steps leading to the bar area. When the door opened, a bedraggled looking pair slipped through the door and hurriedly bolted it against the fury of the storm.
"Got it," Linda said triumphantly.
Freeman looked a little less pleased with their accomplishment. He set his black medical bag on the table next to the packages and headed for the bar. Gladys Ann knew exactly what to do. She set a glass on the bar and a bottle of Jack Daniels next to it. Freeman finished off one and poured another before he began his report.
"We took a couple of extra minutes to check out what's happening. It's worse than any of us thought. The iron bridge has collapsed, and there's a big chunk of road missing out of the causeway. No way over, no way back. The only lights I saw on the whole damn island are over at that new Sheraton. They've evacuated everybody but a security crew, and they're getting what little power they've got from an emergency generator."
Gladys Ann had stopped polishing glasses long enough to listen. "You sayin' we're the only ones on the island besides them folks over at the hotel?"
